Readings for today’s Mass
In today’s gospel, there’s a blind man vying for Jesus’ attention. I am sure that to Jesus and everyone else who is there, it is clear what is on the blind man’s mind. He’s heard all about Jesus and the things he does. But Jesus does not assume. Rather, he welcomes the man into his presence and asks: What do you want from me?
Sometimes we can get in such a hurry to make a difference that we stop seeing the person in front of us. Instead, we see a problem, a situation, a case that needs dealing with. That’s when our response to another can easily become a response to our own need. We want to be helpful and useful! But, first, it’s good to know if and how we can help. So being a good listener becomes important. It’s hard to listen well when we are always in a hurry. Throughout your day, how many people do you meet and greet with a “How are ya? How’s it goin’?” How often do you really hear their response?
We can’t always be helpful to everyone. The first step in knowing whether or not you can help is to first listen to the need. We all want to do what we can for others. After all, it feels good to be able to help someone out. It feels even better if we can help them with what they need.
