Many cultures around the world have similar sites that are sacred to the people. i have had the opportunity to spend time at sites unique to First Nation people. One is just a few miles from campus. They don't get any bus tours and there are no kiosks selling dream catchers or sage bundles, but they are just as significant to them as is Lourdes or the Notre Dame Grotto in S. Bend is to Catholic Christians. All have their place in our encounter of the divine.
i have favorite places where i sometimes pray. But i have learned that, if i can't find God wherever i am, i probably won't find God at a shrine or other holy place either.
Like the Kingdom of Heaven, God is everywhere. The kingdom is all around. Jesus makes this point in today's gospel when asked about the kingdom: Behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.
Perhaps this is what someone else figured out when composing Psalm 139: Where can I go from your spirit? From your presence, where can I flee? If I ascend to the heavens, you are there; if I lie down in Sheol, there you are. If I take the wings of dawn and dwell beyond the sea, Even there your hand guides me.
Where will you encounter the kingdom today? Can your apartment or res hall room be a sacred place for you to pray? Wherever you find yourself today, i bet God is already there waiting for you.
