Readings for today’s Mass
In today’s gospel, Jesus is responding to the Scribe’s lack of compassion and empathy when he heals a paralyzed man. The issue wasn't about whether or not to restore the man’s health. Rather, the problem was in the way Jesus affects the healing. Your sins are forgiven or Pick up your mat and go home. The Scribes are caught up in the process and lose sight of the need to alleviate suffering, while Jesus simply responds to what he feels for the paralytic and those who accompany him. The need for healing was greater than the need to follow the law in getting done. Just do it.
What holds you back from offering good news to others thru your good deeds? Do you ever want to reach out to the suffering but find yourself holding back? What is it that gets in the way? Should it get in the way? Or is it just an excuse to keep you from getting too close?
As you make your way around today, you may find opportunities to show compassion, to empathize with someone. I hope you will take advantage of such grace moments, lest you forget what it means to cry with others.
