Readings for today’s Mass
Through its refrain, the psalm echoes the idea that selflessness brings us peace: In you, O Lord, I have found my peace. Peace is not found within ourselves, not when we have all the worldly things we think we need, but it is found when we know Christ. And when we know Christ, we are selfless and give of ourselves.
Jesus goes further in the Gospel by telling His dinner host to invite to dinner, not the wealthy, but those who cannot repay him, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. When we do things for our friends and family, we may know that they have the ability to repay us. We expect something in return for the sacrifice or service we have done. But when we do things for those who cannot repay us, simply for the good of doing it, that is true selflessness. That is the peace of Christ working inside of us and spreading it to others.
Lord, help me to give of myself because it is right, not because we expect something in return. Lead us all to the resurrection of the righteous, where we will be united with you.
