The site of this basilica has a long history. The first basilica on this site was built in the fourth century when Constantine donated the land he received from the wealthy Lateran family. This first basilica, the site where popes were consecrated, survived fire, earthquakes, and war until the 14th century. The current structure was erected in 1646 by Pope Innocent X.
Church architecture is widely varied in style and décor. Just take a look at our Diocesan Sesquicentennial Anniversary Commemorative book and observe the wide variety of church styles just within our own Diocese. Man is capable of creating many splendid and beautiful things. But the ultimate Creator produced, sculpted, and loved into being the World’s finest creation, us!
Let us be mindful of how truly magnificent our physical bodies and our souls are. We all need to be reminded to nurture ourselves with healthy habits that will increase the vitality and well-being of our physical bodies. We must hold fast to how we nurture our innermost being, our soul, by what we read, listen to, watch on television, or consume through the internet. And finally, let us always remember that each person we meet is also a glorious creation of the Master Architect.
