Today's gospel holds the third of the same proclamation. Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority. He sent them out after instructing them thus: As you go, make this proclamation: The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
I think many of us are like the Pharisees of Luke's gospel who want to know when the kingdom is coming, or is it always just at hand, always just out of reach? Jesus' response to the Pharisees might surprise you: Behold the kingdom is among you. Kingdom time is now.
The great commission of today's gospel is not just to proclaim the presence of the kingdom, it also puts on us the duty to act, to show that we are part of it. Jesus also gave them, and us, authority to act, to drive out demons; to cure disease and illness; to make people whole and restore them to their homes and communities.
The great commission calls us all to recognise the kingdom that is here and to act in ways that shows we belong
What will that look like for you today?.
