It's the story of a wedding feast when none of the invited guests showed up. In utter embarrassment, the king sent his servants out into the streets to invite anyone they found. The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. This is where the shorter version of the gospel stops. This is unfortunate, as the parable has more to say when the king saw one man whose clothes he didn't like.
Because i hang out with people on the streets, my friends down town are the first ones i see coming into the wedding hall. It's a wonderful image and i assume everyone was having the time of their life, until that one man stood out. The king had a hissy fit and threw the guy back out into the streets. Hardly the response i would have expected after the king had to beg people on the streets to come to his soiree.
Because of the guests who ended up coming to the party, the bad and the good alike, i doubt this was still a black tie affair! The king's response to the one seems a little over the top.
Still, he was the king and i like the image of the king opening his party to anyone on the street who would come. That is one of the ideas that Jesus sees as building the Kingdom of Heaven where all are welcome. That's how this parable begins: The Kingdom of Heaven is like. . . It's easy to extend hospitality to pretty people, but what do you do when the guest's hair is matted and their belt doesn't go with their shoes? So she doesn't have a Versace purse and her $95 nail art is chipping, what then? Out the back door with you? No, the kingdom has an open door, is a welcoming place for whomever wants to enter. The Kingdom of Heaven is also a Kingdom of Hospitality.
When's the last time you opened your door and welcomed the stranger?
