Saint of the day - Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Readings for today’s Mass
Today is the feast of the Nativity of Mary. The day falls nine months after we celebrated her Immaculate Conception, so it only makes sense that we celebrate her birthday today.
For the day, the Church offers us the beginning of Matthew's gospel that gives Jesus' version of familyfinder.com. Jesus' genealogy is traced thru Joseph who is the descendant of the big-hitters of the Old Testament - back to King David, all the way back to Abraham. Jesus is the son of Mary, the wife of Joseph. It is Joseph's bloodline, thru his marriage to Mary, that links Jesus, Son of David, to David.
For the Jewish people, this is very important. Everyone had to know who they were and how they fit into the big picture. Maybe you remember from a gospel a few weeks ago: Isn't this the son of Joseph the carpenter from Nazareth? It was a family thing. It's about belonging and where you belong.
Thru Jesus, we too are heirs of that great lineage. One of Jesus' teachings was that we are all family, brothers and sisters of our Lord and children of his father, our father in heaven. Again, hear those words from above: This is my beloved son in whom I take delight. We all need listen to that. We too are the beloved sons and daughters. Surely our Fathers takes great delight.
