Readings for today’s Mass
Families come in all sizes and shapes. In some cultures, families are huge and quite extended, including grandparents, aunts and uncles cousins and more. In other cases, families might be limited to Mom, Dad and the kids, if their are any. Not everyone has children. Not everyone is a Mom or a Dad. But for sure, everyone is a child and has a Mom and a Dad. We call them parents. In 2016, the average family in America consisted of 3.14 people - that is any combination of Dad, Mom and child. Family is the basic unit of any society.
Chapter three of the Book of Sirach speaks directly to the responsibilities of parents, and indirectly to that of children. Parents are to be held in honor by the children; and children are to learn due respect for the parents. It is good that the Church has a day to call attention to the holy nature of the family. Even tho today's feast is all about Joseph, Mary and Jesus, we seize the day to honor all families with them, especially our own.
There is something holy and sacred about a man and woman becoming a Mom and Dad. It is an act of creation left solely to God but only with the cooperation and participation of people.
Happy Holy Family Day!
