Readings for today’s Mass
A film on the life of today's saint,Joseph of Cupertino, bears the title The Reluctant Saint, the story of the Flying Friar. The Flying Friar because the level of his prayer life was said to physically raise him in ecstasy from the floor. It is for this that he is most noted.
Such mystical experiences have been manifested by others and in different ways. Francis of Assisi is said to have carried on his own body the marks of Christ's crucifixion. In New Franken, WI, The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help recognizes apparitions of the Blessed Mother to Adele Brise.
Joseph is The Reluctant Saint because of his aversion to the crowds that wanted to watch him pray, hoping to see him levitate. Being a private person, he could not escape the attention he was drawing.
Sometimes when students stop in to talk about their prayer life, they make comparisons with other people's prayer. Some wonder how much prayer it takes to receive something like the stigmata, or to levitate. They lament the probability of ever achieving such prayer. They are aware of other people who seem to have better prayer lives than themselves and they want to be like them.
To this i say it's good to be inspired by others. It is also good if something mystical happens as a result of your prayer, but remember, the goal of prayer is to grow a relationship with the Almighty. If the goal is to pray, it makes no difference how you measure up against what you perceive about someone else's prayer. If you want to have a conversation with God, there is a vehicle for that - prayer. Personal prayer. If you want to float in the air, rent a hot-air balloon.
i find that many are dissatisfied with their prayer experience simply because they don't do it or they don't set aside quality time to do it. If you want a relationship with God, those things are important.
How do you prepare for prayer? What do you hope to achieve thru prayer?
