Readings for today’s Mass
Today, the prophet Jeremiah tells of the Lord going to another level of our relationship - a new covenant. It will not be like the old covenant written in stone, the covenant people stopped paying attention to. This new covenant will be written within each of us, on each person's heart. No longer will anyone have to rely on what someone else reads from the Law of Moses. Now we are challenged to listen to what we know because it is known to us from the bottom of our hearts. Jeremiah may be naming the role of an informed conscience. It's what we know to be good and true from our innermost self. No longer will they have need to teach their friends and relatives how to know the Lord; for God has already made known to each of us the terms of the new covenant that we all carry within.
What is easier for you: listening to yourself and what is in your heart or relying on others to tell you what is really in your heart? Are you comfortable listening to your well informed conscience? Do you follow it? What do you do to make sure your conscience is indeed well informed?
