Readings for today’s Mass
Today, atop the mountain, we hear those words again; but with a tag ending - listen to him. With these words, the beloved son in whom God delights is introduced to us with authority that did not accompany his baptism. With the words “listen to him,’ Jesus is acknowledged in his role as teacher, as prophet who has something important to say. Jesus has come of age.
At our baptism, each of us becomes the beloved in whom God takes delight. When you were baptized, you were also anointed as priest, prophet and king. Each of us are called to be a prophetic voice, to speak to God on behalf of the people, and to speak to the people on behalf of God. That is the role of the prophet.
In response to your baptismal commitment, how do you take on the role role of prophet? Do you see yourself as a prophet in whom God is pleased? Do you see others in the same role? Do you listen to them?
