As someone living with cancer, I try to stay as fit as possible by going to the Y several days each week. Let me tell you it ain't easy getting myself there. One of the things that helps is the young men and women, mostly from UW-L, who staff the workout center. When I walk in, they greet me by name, smile, ask me how I'm doing. Sometimes we chat about this or that. They make my 50 minutes of workout so much easier, and I leave feeling better. Lighter. I hope that I do the same for them.
Somewhere in their hearts they have made a choice to be light for others. Each of us has light to shine: big ways -- setting up a foundation to fund a food pantry or giving scholarships for nursing students or small ways like thanking waitstaff, cashiers, or smiling and calling people by name. We do what we can. When in doubt, sing that old song: "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine . . . ."
