Readings for today’s Mass
Jesus is a fan of using images to make points memorable. Remember a host of times when he begins a lesson with The kingdom of heaven is like. . . While images are good teaching aids, they don't always hold up over time. Unless you had a Mom who made bread from scratch, adding yeast to flour and warm water might not speak to you. Today, Jesus uses an image that endures, a little child.
The question at hand asks who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. The question Jesus answers seems to deviate a bit; not who is greatest, but what is greatness. For this, the innocence of a child serves well because, at some time or another, everyone has spent time around the little ones.
In today's gospel, and other citations, Jesus uses attributes of children as exemplars of greatness. Those who are humble are greater; those who extend hospitality are great. Peace makers are children of God. Children of God love their enemies. All this adds up to greatness in the kingdom of heaven. i can think of a few more: honesty, gentle, non-judgemental, sincere. You can come up with a few of your own, no doubt.
What comes to mind when you hear the verse: Unless you become like little children. . .? How to you measure greatness? What have you observed in children that speaks of greatness in the kingdom of heaven?
