Readings for today’s Mass
Have you ever had such an encounter with God that you were all aglow and wanted to sit and relish it forever? Sometimes we call that a religious experience. Maybe you were on a retreat or having spiritual direction or settling in for a few moments prayer at the end of the day. You quiet yourself in the hope that God will speak to you, and behold, God speaks. You want to stay there and live in the moment forever.
But as Jesus reminds the three, going to the mountain is for renewing our strength for building the kingdom amongst people. The actual work of building the kingdom happens down in the valley where the people are. It is there we take up the yoke with Jesus and work together. It is good to go to the mountain. Jesus did it often. But that is not where the work is done. Down in the valley, with renewed strength, the fruit of our labor will be seen. Like the apostles, we celebrate and acclaim, Lord, it is good that we are here.
