We've all seen the ads from organizations looking for contribution to causes that end suffering. Thru Save the Children you can adopt a child and make sure they eat well - for less than a dollar a day. With a monthly gift, the ASPCA will help you sponsor a pet. These ads often use images specifically chosen to elicit a strong emotional response from the would be donor. Emotions have ways of getting responses.
In today's gospel, Jesus has such a reaction to a leper who knelt down and begged him, "If you wish..." How could anyone not wish something better for the leper. He probably had some degree of disfiguration and was banished from the community. By law, he couldn't even try to make a better impression. And Jesus was moved with pity, (more literally, he had a visceral, gut reaction of compassion), and said what i would wish we all would say to such a man, "But of course i wish better for you." In response to having been emotionally touched, Jesus offers a healing touch.
Who are the lepers of our day, those avoided and kept at a distance? What is your reaction to them? What draws from you a visceral, gut reaction of compassion?
