Readings for today’s Mass
The man in this Gospel was able to recognize and acknowledge that Jesus is Lord and Savior over everything. He asks for healing for his servant, knowing full well that Jesus has the power to do so. However, he also acknowledges his own status as a sinner, and humbles himself before God. Not only does he humble himself before God, he has faith that it is God alone who can alter his human sinfulness.
In Mass, we alter this saying slightly to refer to our souls rather than the servant. We recognize that we are imperfect and that we sin, but we faithfully proclaim that Jesus is the one who can save us, who can heal us, and who can make us worthy to receive Him “under our roof.”
Lord, what is under my roof that is preventing you from entering? Help me to open my heart to you and be ready to receive you this Christmas. Allow me to clean out whatever excess is present within my soul and make room for your great mercy.
