Our heart is a powerful organ. It pumps between 1,500 and 2,000 gallons of blood a day! It is our life force. Heart health is of upmost importance in our culture today. Studies are also showing that the experiences we have with emotion are integrally linked between the brain, heart and body. The heart and the brain are in a constant two-way conversation sending complex signals to one another.
So, why all this discussion about the heart? Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This solemnity reminds us of the intimate and real love that God has for all his creation. It also reminds us that God was human in the person of Jesus. God had a human heart that felt the same emotions we experience. It is sometimes challenging for us finite humans to understand how much God loves us. It may help us to realize that we share the same deep emotional and physical feelings as Jesus did. When God looks upon us his beautiful creations his heart swells with joy. When we are hurting his heart hurts with us. Let us rest secure in this deep love and let us guide how we will our lives.
