Readings for today’s Mass
Jesus makes a pretty big deal out of the need to hear his words. At least seven times he cautions the followers: Whoever has ears ought to hear. i wonder if the point Jesus is trying to make is first about listening to what is heard. In the course of a given day, i hear a lot of sounds. i don't listen to most of them.
i found myself preoccupied with these two words so i went to the dictionary. Here is what i found. Hear: to perceive with the ear a sound made by someone or something. And listen: to give one's attention to what is heard. Everybody in the crowds that followed Jesus heard what he said. Some gave their attention to what they heard. i suspect most of those went no further; which brings us to the final component of Jesus' definition of family. Just to be fair, i also went back to the dictionary for this word. Act: to behave in the way specified. Something else Jesus is very clear about is the nature of the specified way. We hear it in his sermons and his parables. He spent his public ministry telling us about it. It's what the gospels are all about. Still, many hear, some listen, and a few act. Being kingdom people is at least a three part process.
How well do you listen when you hear Jesus' words? Does anything about them move you to act? Be careful how you answer - Everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand.
