Saint of the day - Immaculate Conception of Mary
Readings for today’s Mass
It is a very common misunderstanding that the Immaculate Conception is really referring to Jesus’ conception by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary. That, of course, is an entirely different matter. Today’s feast is about the conception of Mary, the mother of Jesus within the womb of Mary’s Mother, Anne. The dogma teaches that, from the moment of her conception, Mary was free of original sin.
Here is how Pope Pius IX promulgated the dogma in 1854: The most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.
The Immaculate Conception teaches us that Mary alone was worthy to bring God into the fullness of our humanity thru Jesus. For this very purpose, she remained without the stain of original sin.
Another verse in the song asks Mary if she knew that "when you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God." Only she could make it so.
