Readings for today’s Mass
Whenever the topic of forgiveness comes up in the readings or in conversation, i am reminded of the late pope's visit to a prison inmate who wished him dead. i wonder how many times in those two and a half years since he was shot did the pope forgive Mehmet Ali - seven times? Seventy-seven times? Seven times seventy times? The numbers don't really matter but for the last forgiveness, when he forgave from the heart. Perhaps it took him that much time to forgive his brother from the heart. That's when he had to go tell him.
What Jesus is asking of us is real forgiveness, not just lip service. Forgiveness that wishes every good for the offender. It is often challenging to be forgiving of even minor infractions, but we have a model in Jesus and in John Paul II. Even if it takes seven times seventy times to get there, you will know when it comes from the heart.
