Readings for today’s Mass
Today is Christmas, Yesterday, along with it having been Christmas Eve, was also a remembrance of a particular Christmas day at Greccio, Italy. It was there in 1223 that the first ever recreation of the nativity is recorded in the primary sources on the life of Francis of Assisi. Inspired by a visit to Bethlehem and the place held as the birthplace of Jesus, Francis dedicated himself to recreating what we all know today as the nativity scene or the cheche. While most nativity sets reflect the European culture, Christian communities around the world celebrate Christmas with images that reflect their various cultures. The many manifestations of Jesus' birth truly reflect our belief that the Son of God was born for all people everywhere.
Of all the things we've come to know about St. Francis, the nativity scene is high on the list of things we remember. But few if us remember that it was Francis who started it all.
