Most certainly it relates to something we see all too often on the evening news when we witness the horror of war around the world. Mothers ,fathers and children grieving the deaths and sufferings of their parents, their sons and daughters. Anyone with a bit of empathy should be moved to suffer with them.
Like the suffering of so many today, Mary's pain was that of a sword thru her heart. Suffering with her at the foot of the cross, were those closest to her. The evangelist mentions four who suffered with Mary in her extreme emotional pain. How she must have appreciated not having to be there alone.
How do you experience the suffering of others? Can you empathize - suffer with them and thereby be a source of comfort and consolation. Can you respond as did Mary's sister, or the disciple whom Jesus loved; or are you one of so many others who were there and ran away?
