Saint of the day - Paul the Hermit
Readings for today’s Mass
We really don't know about his life of heroic virtue that may have led to his becoming a saint, but we do know he followed at least one example of Jesus. He went away alone to pray. There are a few citations in the gospels that speak of Jesus' need to escape and recollect. It usually followed times of intense preaching and healing that Jesus would withdraw alone to a lonely place to pray. What St. Paul the Hermit did not do was take the fruit of his solitude and prayer back to the people. He lived a life quite removed from other human contact.
We don't have too many hermits any more; none that we hear much about, but there are many people drawn to the idea of the hermetic life. Like Jesus, it would be good for each of us to set aside from our busy lives productive time alone with the Lord. How often do you do that? Is it easy for you to schedule down time when you can withdraw in prayer? Plan something today. Come away with the Lord.
