Readings for today’s Mass
Neither is there any subtlety in the contrast of this event with the one we prepare to celebrate during Advent. The nativity of Jesus cannot be further estranged from what happened on the mountain. What we prepare for in Advent is the lowly, humble birth of a baby whose family will soon flee for their lives, refugees in a foreign land. Who would have known that such a lowly beginning would lead to the profound manifestation the apostles witnessed on the mountain.
It is important to remember Jesus' lowly start in life. Surely his humble beginnings informed what he said and did in the gospels. As you journey thru Advent, look for Jesus in the lowly, those humbled by life's circumstances. In one of his famous
homilies, St. John Chrysostom is oft quoted, "If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find him in the chalice." While we call him Christ, King of the World, we also recognize his humble beginnings. Perhaps in the next life we will encounter the fullness of Jesus on the mountain. In this life, look for him in the least of those among you.
