Saint of the day - Andrew
Readings for today’s Mass
At first, he may have been a reluctant follower of Jesus. Their first encounter was in the marketplace. Andrew was with the John, the Baptist, who pointed Jesus out to him: Behold, the Lamb of God! Curious, Andrew followed at a distance until Jesus noticed him and they spoke. On this occasion, the gospel tells us, Andrew and his brother went with Jesus but only stayed for the day.
Andrew's second encounter with Jesus is recorded in today's gospel. He is with his brother and Dad tending their fishing gear. This time Jesus must have been more persuasive; or maybe the brothers had time to think it over. Maybe they had time to get to know Jesus better and the invitation was less intimidating. Then there were all those times when Jesus told people to not be afraid; maybe they finally heard him.
It isn't always easy to chart new waters; to leave behind what we are most familiar with even when we know it is for something better. It can be a scary move. But that's what Jesus asks, that we leave behind anything that gets in the way of total submission to his word, of being people of the kingdom. That is also why he keeps telling us to be not afraid. It is for us to trust those words.
Is there something that still gets in the way of you giving yourself completely to Jesus? Spend some time with that today and be not afraid.
