Readings for today’s Mass
In response to two disciples who wanted the top posts on Jesus' right and left in the new kingdom: Jesus summoned them and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
That is the heart of servant/Christian leadership. Do you see how radical that is in a culture such as ours? We encourage and reward those who are driven by financial success, those who relentlessly go for the top of the pyramid, who do what they have to to reach the next rung of the corporate ladder, those who measure their value and goodness by their GPA.
What is your gut reaction to what Jesus tells us today: It shall not be so among you"? He is teaching his followers. He's talking to us. What are you going to do?
