The second model of covenant that God is establishing is quite different. The statutes of this covenant will not need to be studied from a book. It appears the Law of Moses had served its purpose, and it was time for something new. This time, I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts. No longer will they have need to teach their friends and relatives how to know the Lord. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the Lord,
The New Testament offers Jesus, who initiates this new covenant by his death and resurrection. This new covenant is written upon everyone's heart. It is best summed up in Matthew's gospel when a scholar of the old law asked a question about the commandments, to which Jesus answered: You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.
What has been written upon my heart, i think of as a conscience. It's the thing about me that i cannot fool when it comes to knowing right from wrong, good from evil. It is the final arbiter where i wrestle with decisions. Hopefully, with a well informed conscience, my choices will reflect the new covenant based on what God has written upon my heart, the love i have for God and my neighbor.
