Of notice as well, this is Jesus' first public appearance and it too begins where the story eventually ends. Luke describes the holy family going to Jerusalem for the week-long Passover celebration. At some point, Jesus is separated from the family and is later found in the Temple. The gospels end with Jesus going to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, he is overcome by the crowds, and brought to the Temple where he will be judged and sentenced to death. Similar, yet contrasting stories in the life of the savior.
We will soon be closing out the Advent/Christmas season. On this day of the Holy Family, i hold out for your reflection, a twelve year old boy, eager to learn the Torah from the elders of the Temple. Imagine yourself at such an age of curiosity. Have you ever sought the wisdom and counsel of one learned in our faith tradition in order that you might grow more deeply as a follower of Jesus? Eventually, every little boy and girl grows to be men and women, but our faith does not always keep up with our bodies. Make it a plan for the new year to seek the wisdom of the ages. Find your own opportunities to spend time in the "Temple" with the Lord. The elders are waiting for you.
