Saint of the day - Gertrude the Great
Readings for today’s Mass
In the scriptures, women seldom have starring roles, but from biblical scholarship we are able to uncover the greatness of many; Miriam, Sarah, Jezebel,Hagar. Or from the New Testament; Phoebe, Mary of Magdala, the unnamed woman with the alabaster jar of perfumed oil.
Think of the standout women of the last century; Rosa parks, Golda Meir, Dorothy Day. Or in the present day, consider Donna Shalala, Malala Yousafzai, Diana, Princess of Wales, Sonia Sotomayor.
Today's St. Gertrude the Great is a reminder to women to strive to greatness. Some ideologies would find your place to be at least less than the man. It's an age old debate between complementarianism and egalitarianism. You can pick your your pleasure. i know for sure, there is a reason why Gertrude wears the title of Great. i wonder who the next "great" woman will be. She may be somewhere on campus right now.
