Readings for today’s Mass
Today's gospel reminds me of this young man. Jesus just has delivered his Bread of Life discourse. It introduces Jesus as the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever. He told the followers Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.
As you might imagine, this was very hard for some of them to hear. As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer walked with him. They decided to throw in the towel.
By now we all know that following Jesus is not always the easiest thing to do. When his words challenge us to grow beyond our comfort, throwing in the towel might be the easiest way out. Jesus' question to all of us today is equally sharp: Do you also want to leave? Well, do you? Do you have other options? Or can you respond as did Peter: To whom else shall we go? What will you say?
