Have you ever been faced with ultimatums that had you torn between options? Sometimes, in the business of running a parish, we have to decide whether or not to terminate a longstanding relationship with a contractor who doesn't seem able to provide what we need. It isn't easy to cut ties. With the recent revelations of sexual abuse in Pennsylvania, many Catholics struggle with the question of staying Catholic or not. One way or the other, they will have to decide.
As for Israel, upon reflection on their long and faithful relationship with the Lord who has always been their and cared for them. They cannot imagine serving another god: Far be it from us to forsake the Lord.
Sometimes when a relationship we are in tempts us to stray, like the Israelites, it's good to reflect on the past goodness of the relationship that brought it to where it is at present. Always know what you are giving up with your decision. Sometimes it may be a very serious matter. Always tread lightly.
