The First Letter of John makes this point as well for those who claim to be followers of Christ. Whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked. Jesus talks a tough line when it comes to loving your neighbor as yourself. Many are quick to agree with him, we should take care of the down and outers. At least somebody should. Some of us even try to help out, if only from a distance.
But that is what is at the heart of Jesus' words, something throughout the Old Testament, extending love and care to those i need. It can be a tough road to follow, but it is all that Jesus asks. We all ought to walk just as he walked.
