Readings for today’s Mass
Imagine a time when your thirst for something became unbearable, when your longing for comfort from something or somebody took you to the pits of grieving. What loss were you experiencing at that time? That's where the writer of the psalm is when not in union with God. His flesh pines and hie soul thirsts. He is like a desert.
There is a space within each of us meant only for God. When the space is empty, our whole self aches to be made complete. We, too, can seek comfort as does the psalmist because he knows what the solution is for such great loss. Perhaps you might try it as well in your time of emptiness: Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name. As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.
