Readings for today’s Mass
The image today is of Jesus as the the keeper of the flame, as a lamp lighter. We are the lamp. Jesus' teaching is a process of bringing the light to those in darkness. The light comes to us thru his words, We, as the lamps, are expected to behave like the lamp and spread the light of his word into the darkness. To do that, the lamp needs to take its place on the lampstand. Putting it under a basket or under a bed limits the power of the light to dispel the darkness.
For those to whom the light is given and those who share the word of light, like the seed rooted in good soil, the light only grows. Like seed on rocky or weedy soil, the light that is not tended and shared only grows weaker, dimmer; like a light under a basket.
Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away. Lk 8:18
