Readings for today’s Mass
There are all kinds of references in the gospels regarding the care of fruit trees and vines. Jesus is well aware of the need for a good gardener to know when and how to prune the orchard or vineyard in order to maximize the potential yield. The idea is that, when a plant has too much growth to maintain, it has less resources for producing fruit.
In today's gospel, Jesus does not exclude himself from needing a good pruning now and again. He is aware of the unproductive branches within himself that need to be cut away..I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.
We all carry around a lot of dead wood that can overburden us on our journey. Getting rod of non-productive excess makes for easier traveling and a healthier traveler. That adds up to more productive work.
Take a good look at yourself. Where are you in need of some healthy pruning?
