In my more fantastic moments I imagine Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks dressed in British advocates robes walking on each side of me in the face of tough decisions, moral dilemmas, and forces that could crush my spirit. God is always my Advocate: that is, someone who is my champion, protector, patron, wise adviser, and pleads my case.
I really don't understand people who believe that they can get through this life without advocates -- those spirits of truth and love, the humans that help us or The Advocate -- the Holy Spirit.
In trying to think of an example, I'm not sure why he came up after 45 years, but I thought of a grad school prof and my thesis adviser who wrote me a stellar recommendation that got me into a doctoral program I really wanted to attend. Yes, I had done well in several of his courses and thanks to him, wrote a good MA thesis. But I also blew a course on the American novel because I allowed myself to join the cast of The Thurber Carnival in a summer stock production. Opening night was the night before my final exam. Needless to say, I did not shine on the final and nearly fell asleep. I slipped by, but barely. My advocate saw the good in me and my potential, gave me wise advice, and taught me what I needed to be successful. So I love the image of the Holy Spirit, my ever-present, all-wise and loving Advocate.
Come Holy Spirit, come and advocate for us in the face of all that would diminish and harm us. Amen. Alleluia.
