Readings for today’s Mass
Forbes just published their list of the 400 wealthiest Americans. Their worth ranges from a mere 2 billion to 90 billion. The top 46 of those are double-digit billions. Their combined worth is 2.4 trillion. That looks like this 2,400,000,000,000. Federal spending for this year is estimated at about 3.5Tr. The federal debt is in excess of 20Tr and is growing by about 1M per minute.
Student Loan Hero says that Americans owe over $1.45 trillion in student loan debt, spread out among about 44 million borrowers. The average Class of 2016 graduate has $37,172 in student loan debt. For students in Wisconsin, it's 28,810.
This is not intended to depress you. But it is against this backdrop that i invite you to read and reflect on today's gospel from the evangelist, Luke.
