Readings for today’s Mass
Equity is an important thing to most people. We all want equal opportunity. A fair shake. No one likes to be put down or to have limited access to upward mobility. It's the Peter principle: we want equal access to opportunity to max out our ability.
i think of this as i read this gospel passage. It challenges me to read it carefully. On the one hand, it has a negative ring that reminds students and slaves of their proper relationship to teachers and masters. On the positive side, it says that it is enough that the one can at least become the equal of the other. There is room for advancement.
The challenge of this is in the relationship between the two. The one has to desire and strive for more; the other has to encourage and foster, and be good with losing the place as master or teacher. We like the feel of being a step above. At the same time, it can be a challenge for the student to find a new teacher who will raise them higher when they become the peer of the teacher. It needs to be a very interactive relationship between the two so each can empower the other so we can all soar on eagle's wings.
