Readings for today’s Mass
But we are not celebrating a piece of furniture, rather, the person who occupies the piece of furniture. It's like the chair of a committee. A committee chair is the person who leads the whole; the one with authority to guide and speak on behalf of the rest of the committee. In the case of the Catholic Church, the chair is Pope Francis who bears the authority bestowed on Peter in today's gospel: You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.
But our celebration is not confined to the Pope. As you might guess by now, what we really celebrate is the authority given to the Pope by the Holy Spirit to to guide and to speak the truth to the people of God in the name of the whole Church.
Not all popes have exercised their authority well. Some were bad men. Even with such as these, we believe it is ultimately thru the authority of the Holy Spirit that God continues to lead the Church. Even when some of us prove ourselves to unworthy.
Thru his authority, Pope Francis has a message for you for the season of Lent. Find some time in this season to read it.
