Readings for today’s Mass
The reading from the prophet, Isaiah, is quite a different picnic. On this mountain, Isaiah says several times; On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all people, all the nations. On this mountain, things are going to be different. The feast here will not include rehydrated fish or heavily salted jerky with dry bread. This table will be filled with fresh food, rich and juicy with pure, choice wine. On this mountain, the Lord will take care of everyone.
The two readings sandwich Psalm 23 where the poet likens himself to a sheep with a good shepherd who takes great care of the flock. With the Lord as my shepherd, i shall want for nother, writes the psalmist. This shepherd knows where the verdant pastures and the refreshing waters are. With the knowledge that the shepherd has of every valley and hill, the sheep are secure and safe - even in darkness.
The Lord is the good shepherd who guards the sheep in the dark valley, who prepares a lavish feast on the mountaintop, who feeds our hunger with his words and heals our brokenness with his touch. This is the house of the Lord where i shall dwell for years to come, where only goodness and kindness will follow me.
