Readings for today’s Mass

As the excitement of Advent and the anticipation of Christmas builds, it is easy to lose focus on what is right in front of us. In today’s first reading, Elijah is praised for coming to “put an end to wrath before the day of the Lord”. Elijah saw that the people of this time had let what was most important slip from their memory. The purpose of Elijah's prophecy was to set things right between the families and tribes of Israel and to appease God's wrath and set things right between Israel and God.
Likewise, the writer of Ps 80 pleads with God for justification, for things to be set aright between God and the people who have strayed from the covenant. Lord, make us turn to you...
our one, true hope.
T
here is beauty in the simple act of turning back to God so he might change our lives forever. I remember a specific moment in my life where I felt like, on my attempt to find peace and satisfaction, I turned the other way. One night, I finally heard the still, small voice of God, calling me to turn around. Thankfully, I listened, and from that moment, my life has never been the same. I have become so aware of God’s peace, love, comfort, strength, and grace. It is a great reminder of how special we are to God when he knows we are longing for him before we do.
In today’s gospel, the disciples asked Jesus about Elijah's return. Jesus' response was twofold: Elijah's was already here and no one paid attention; and the prophecy of Elijah has returned thru the prophecy of John the Baptist.
With today's readings, our deep longing for salvation is clear. But in the frenzy of the holiday season, it is easy to lose sight of what is truly important. As we pray thru this holy season let us remind ourselves of the most important aspect of Advent: preparing ourselves for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Challenge yourself and the ones you love to find a longing for Jesus as much as He is longing for you.
