One quality that made Francis and Jesus "first" was the quality of listening. They genuinely admired the wisdom of other people and listened. It is a quality of effective leaders often overlooked by those who focus on "winning."
Ann McGee-Cooper, long-time consultant for Southwest Airlines, says: "The servant leader works to build a solid foundation of shared goals by listening deeply to understand the needs and concerns of others." Once we understand needs, we can build responses that make all of us winners.
James Autry, retired CEO of a Fortune 500 company, remarked, "I do have a piece of advice--quick but not easy--and I offer it to new managers, to would be servant leaders, and even to parents: When you are tempted to tell someone what to do, instead ask the question, 'What do you think you should do now?' Or in an organizational setting, 'What do you think we should do?' Remember, when tempted to tell, ask instead."
The life of Christ has much more to do with all of us being first. We tap into the wisdom and courage of the community by listening.
