Readings for today’s Mass
This is the corner Herod finds himself backed into in today's gospel. When the king was so pleased with a dancer's performance, he granted her anything she wanted. This gesture on his part, was a boast to show off his power and generosity. He could do that. He was the king. But i doubt he ever thought she'd ask for the head of the Baptist. What will he do? WIll he be a man of his word, or will stand on his convictions and deny her request. He didn't want to see John dead. He liked listening to him and knew him to be a holy and righteous man. What is the highest man in the pecking order going to do? We all know the end of the story and that is why we memorialize John today as a martyr.
What values influence your decision making? Are they built on solid ground? Do you stand for what you know is ethically good, or do the social mores of your group of friends sometimes get in the upper hand? What will guild you the next time you find yourself in a similar situation? What are you going to do?
