Another way to look at hope is as an alternative to despair. The story of Job is the epitome of this hope. When Job was at the bottom, it was hope in the Lord that sustained him. He did not throw in the towel or give in to despair as his friends encouraged.
Hope might also be pitted against self indulgence. Sometimes when we've lost our grip, when it feels there is nothing left, a tendency is to grab for anything without considering it's value or consequences. That's when bad choices can become destructive habits.
The psalmist reminds us of some of the things that just don't work to satisfy. The psalmist will not indulge in these. On the other hand, we are reminded of the one thing that is sure to provide, the Lord God who will always be our refuge, a fortress, our rock and strength. It is the Lord to whom we can always turn for sustenance, who will lift us up as on eagles wings.
