Readings for today’s Mass
In our Gospel reading today we see Jesus reminding the people that God should be first in their lives. To us, this might seem like an obvious reminder. As we see from our Old Testament readings God’s people were often distracted by other gods and were in constant need of being brought back to the one true God. As Catholic Christians, we believe that there is only one God and He is the one we should put as the priority in our lives. But believing and living this out are two different things. Jesus goes on to say that the next important thing we are to do is to love our neighbor as ourselves. If we truly live out the first commandment, hopefully it is easy for us to recognize God in the others that we meet and see them as God sees them, as an image and reflection of Himself. When our agenda, our desires, our selfishness take over, then God is not first in our lives and we might get distracted and miss His presence standing before us in the grocery checkout line.
