Readings for today’s Mass
My favorite prayer in these hard times comes from St Francis of Assisi: "Most High, glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart and give me true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity, sense and knowledge, Lord, that I may carry out Your holy and true command." Even a saint like Francis needed God's help to do the right thing -- God's "holy and true command."
In a general way, we know what God commands of us: love God and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. When how to love comes down to particular circumstances, that is when we need divine guidance, "sense and knowledge" as Francis says.
One final piece of wisdom comes from the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius of Loyola, who told his followers that, when they were trying to figure out the right thing to do, they should pray like Francis did, but then ask themselves something like this: "If a friend came to me facing the same decision I was facing, what would I tell her or him to do? Then go and follow your own advice." God has not left us alone; we just need to engage God's help in prayer and discernment.
