This seems weighty to me as the fall election is just weeks away. Elected officials wield a lot of power. They are given authority to use their power when we elect them to public office. Not all, who are elected, responsibly use the authority entrusted to them. Some exceed their authority with decisions they make on my behalf. Hence, it is most important that we all know well the candidates who will represent us and that they fully understand the issues they will be dealing with in the name of the common good.
As you prepare for the upcoming election, take your role seriously. Those elected will have power and authority over you and things important to you.
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has prepared a document to assist you in your decision making. A brief summary of Faithful Citizenship is available at the Newman Center or online here. If you want the Bishops' extended text, you can get that here as well.
We all have the power to authorize others to work on our behalf for the common good. It is a right as well as a responsibility. Don't take it lightly.
