Readings for today’s Mass
What Jesus is calling us to with these various conditions is the total and unconditional commitment to him and his good news. Anything else that we might cling to, must always come second after the words of Jesus. He seems to have little tolerance for anything that would be a distraction to the follower from the message of Christ.
It all sounds rather intimidating. Many would be put off from following the Lord. It is good to keep in mind a few other words Jesus repeats in the gospels: Do not be afraid. Yes, much will be expected, but count on his grace to always be there for us as needed. So get ready to step out. And listen to the words of Mark if you need and take the walking stick with you.
