Readings for today’s Mass
We hear Jesus praising God because although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. To be childlike relates to the way children seem to have an innate trust in adults. They are good listeners and learn quickly be watching and listening. As we grow older, those attributes tend to erode as we become wise and learned. In an old Andy Griffith Show, Andy tells Opie that he has to be honest about the condition of a bike he wants to sell to a friend. Later, when Andy isn't forthcoming about the condition of his house he wants to sell, Opie questions him saying, "You mean kids have to be honest, but grownups don't?"
Being childlike is not being childish. Jesus invites us to recapture the innate trust in him and his words. We can hear them at face value. We don't need to get overly analytical about what he said. Love your enemies means just that. Care for the poor and the downtrodden doesn't need an explanation, certainly not for children. It's the wise and the learned who lose sight of the words.
